SAILING FOR FUN

Sailing is both a fun recreation and serious sport. Regardless of the many differences in size and type, all sailboats work the same way to harness the wind for propulsion. Learn how sailboats work, common types of sailboats, and where people go to sail.
 
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary conducts a number of boating courses at many locations around the country, including a comprehensive Sailing Skills and Seamanship course. Sailboats and sailing involve many specialized terms that may be unfamiliar to those new to sailing. Here are some of the terms Shank The long, straight part of an anchor, to which the anchor rope attaches at one end and the fulk at the other end., Fluke, The pointed part(s) of an anchor that digs into the bottom when the anchor sets.  Jib Saling is triangular sail attached to the forestay or headstay of a sailboat.  Furl In general, to furl a sail is to roll it up, such as to furl the mainsail on the boom (or into the boom or mast in some contemporary systems).  Draft The depth of a boat in the water, measured from the waterline to the lowest section of the keel.
Keel Definition.The deep vertical section of a sailboat affixed to the bottom of the hull. The keel helps the boat resist the leeward force of the wind and provides stability against excessive heeling. and many more.
