Latch hook is one method of rug making. Latch hook may also be used to complete wall hangings and pillows. This method uses small strips of yarn and a distinctive hook that gives the craft its name. the latch hook tool is curved at the top and, is used to draw loops of yarn through canvas or similar material.
Latch hook dates back to the 1850s. But became extremely popular in the United States in the 1970s. It originated from the method of rug hooking. Workers from mills were aloud to collect leftover scraps of yarn that the factory did not use. They would take the scraps home and hook them through some backing. Which is why it was known to be a poor mans craft. It has evolved greatly into what we do now. Even today latch hook is a great way to pass the time for all ages. There are many kits that you can purchase to get started. They come in a verity of designs and sizes. You can purchase these kits at just about any craft store. When you become more experienced you can even create your own designs.
I personally think that latch hook is a very enjoyable hobby. I have completed four of them and plan to do many more.
